Laodicea – A church expected to overcome

Pastor Sam Chiramel

Key passage: Revelation 3:14-22

14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.22 whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

The last verse has the introduction of the message to this church.

Verse 22 “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

The Pseudo Self Sufficiency

  • The church says it lacks nothing.
  • God’s messages are always clear and it has a connection with our life.
  • It is really appalling to see that there is no commendation given to this church from the Lord.

Deeds of the church known by the Lord and the deed known by the world

  • The deeds of the church are neither hot nor cold! Why? Are they very balanced in their acts? The church became ineffective over a period of time.
  • This church felt that they lack nothing!
  • The specialties of this church is that it is neither hot nor cold and the self comprehension of the church was that the church was rich. They said they were rich and acquired wealth, moreover they didn’t need a thing. V.17.

Symptoms of self sufficiency

  • Always feel full and lack nothing
  • Reject counselling, reject word of God as authority, and reject any spiritual assistance and do not feel the need for spiritual stuff

What is the counseling the Lord gives to the church?

18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.

We need God sufficiency. The Lord look upon this church as a father looks up on his ignorant son.

2-4 December 2015, Chennai, India. During the floods, a doctor sent the following WhatsApp message:

“I am Prasanna Venkittaram working as a system analyst for an American software company in Chennai. Presently drawing 18 lakhs per annum, and the proud owner of a 3BHK in the suburbs of Chennai. Today I have two credit cards worth more than one lakh credit limit on each card and a bank balance of 65 thousand in my account. But due to heavy water logging I am not able to move out my house, all I need is water and food for my survival. Till last week I was worried about my appraisal and was expecting at least 15% hike. But today I am standing in my terrace waiting for a food packet.”

The door of Grace is still open. The Lord says He still loves the Church. That is amazing – Grace is still available.

Let’s read Romans 6:1

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase?

Jesus knock at the door like an uninvited guest. But we need him. We need him more than any time in the history.

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne.22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Embrace the grace of God, repent and depend!
